I spent more than three years as a contract photographer for National Geographic, covering the majority of events held at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. It gave me the opportunity to photograph and learn from remarkable people working across the social and physical sciences while navigating the lighting and logistical challenges that come with high-level event work.
It was formative work for me professionally and a source of personal joy.
Working at National Geographic regularly put me in rooms with people who had spent their lives exploring, researching, documenting, and explaining the world around us. My job was to tell the story of those events visually while remaining attentive to the people, ideas, and interactions that made each one different.
That work sharpened instincts I still rely on today: anticipating what matters, solving problems without disrupting the event, and creating polished photographs even when the circumstances are less than ideal.
Different subjects call for different approaches, but the style, intention, and care behind them remain the same.
