There’s nothing quite like hearing your favorite artist live. I’ve been to well over a hundred concerts, and each one has reinforced what makes live music so compelling: the visuals, the energy, and the connection between the artist and the people who came to see them.
When I photograph a performance, I’m looking for more than a good close-up of the artist on stage. I want the photographs to capture the energy in the room, the connection with the audience, and the moments that made that particular performance worth remembering.
Photographing live music brings together two things I care deeply about: music itself and the challenge of making strong photographs in unpredictable environments.
I know how to work with difficult stage lighting, move without becoming a distraction to the artist or the audience, and anticipate the moments that will make the strongest photographs before they disappear.
Whether I’m photographing an artist under stage lights or creating a portrait in a controlled studio, I’m looking for the same thing: an image that feels specific to the person and the music behind it.
Rarely does a great moment announce itself. I pay attention to the artist, the lighting, and the music so I can anticipate the moments that convey the energy of a live performance rather than simply document what happened onstage.
Away from the stage, I approach musicians first as people. I create portraits and promotional images that feel vivid while still feeling authentic to the artist in front of my camera.
